Nathan graduated from Maplewood Academy in 1999. After attending 4 different colleges and universities, including years abroad at Newbold College in England and Colegio Adventista de Sagunto in Spain, he graduated from Southern Adventist University with a BA in International Studies: Spanish emphasis, and minors in Religion and Intercultural Communication. Nathan returned to Maplewood Academy in 2003 – 04, working as the Assistant Boys’ Dean, Recruiter, Spanish II & III teacher and Ski Club sponsor. Coming back to MWA was a life-changing experience that led him to work at Union College for 6 years – first as a recruiting intern, then enrollment advisor, and finally as Assistant Director of Recruitment. During those six years, Nathan made numerous recruiting trips to Maplewood and loved seeing students from MWA make the decision to continue their education at Union College.
In 2010, Nathan accepted a call to return to Newbold College, in England, to serve as their Enrollment and Marketing Officer. During his first week on the job, at the 2010 General Conference of SDA meetings in Atlanta, he met a young delegate from Finland named Emilia at the Newbold College Alumni Afternoon Tea. Nearly a year – to the day – later, they were married in Finland. Nathan and Emilia enjoyed working together at Newbold for the next year, before moving to Emilia’s home city of Tampere, Finland, where Emilia taught at the Tampere SDA Christian Elementary School, and Nathan studied Finnish for 15 months. After completing his Finnish studies, Nathan began working at Operation Mobilization Finland, a non-denominational Christian missions organization. He started as a social media and marketing intern and continued working as Development Officer for two years.
On February 11, 2015, Nathan and Emilia welcomed their daughter Silja Isabel into the world. 2017 was an especially eventful year for Nathan’s family, as he accepted the call to become Maplewood’s Vice Principal for Development and Alumni in late March. At the end of May, Nathan completed his Master of Science in Administration (MSA) degree with research emphases in nonprofit marketing and fundraising through Andrews University. At the end of July, his family packed up their worldly possessions into a shipping container headed for the USA. Two weeks later, on August 13, 2017, their son Kaspian Samuel was born. The whole family headed to Maplewood Academy five weeks later, where Nathan spent the month surrounding Alumni Weekend working at MWA and getting to know the staff and students better.
After returning to Finland to celebrate the 100-Year Independence Centenary and Christmas in December, Nathan and his family made their permanent move to Maplewood Academy at the beginning of January 2018. They have thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in the MWA and greater Hutchinson community over the past year. Nathan and Emilia share a love of travel and learning about new cultures, mission work and global development and working with SDA Christian young people. Nathan enjoys playing guitar and bass, singing, golf, snowboarding, fine vegan cuisine and single origin dark chocolate. But what he enjoys most is being a devoted dad to his two children and husband to his lovely wife Emilia. He is excited about returning to Maplewood Academy for a third time and having the opportunity to make a lasting difference at his alma mater.
